Perfect Resolutions

Luke 9:51

You’ve had a bit of time, what’s the list like? Is it perfectly completed? Does it look curiously like last year’s list? Maybe even exactly, because it needed rework?

Resolutions can be good discipline for us. It can point us to things that are good for us, maybe guard us against things that aren’t so good for us, but I would argue they’re most value exists in that they show us again and again just how incapable we are at being really, really good.

What about Jesus? What would resolution look like if Jesus were very resolved? If he really set his mind on a particular thing?

St. Luke records such an instance right in the middle of the gospel in Chapter 9 reads this way:

Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem. — Luke 9:51

When Jesus was perfectly resolved, he went where death was. He went where enemies were plotting to entrap him and kill him. He went where his disciples wanted him desperately not to go for fear of his life and their own. When Jesus was perfectly resolved, he went where his father would have him go, exactly where his father would have him go, right into the jaws of death to die for sins. For your sins and for mine.

Perfect resolution in Jesus. And that you can fall asleep on. Believe it for Jesus sake, amen.
