God is Eternal

Where did God come from? It can be difficult to wrap your mind around something that has no beginning, but Pastor Moldstad says it makes sense that something or someone has been around forever. That someone is God.

Psalm 90:2

What is God like? The Bible really provides us many details concerning God. His characteristics. His attributes. One that I like to focus on today is that God is eternal. Our passage for today is from Psalm 90 verse 2 and it says this

Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity you are God. (Psalm 90:2)

The scripture reading tells us that God is eternal and I think part of that it’s easy for us to maybe understand. That God can last forever. We even as human beings can imagine such things. People who are immortal, that can last forever. I think about even the fictional character like a vampire is thought to be someone who cannot die. And we can maybe even envision ourselves living forever or existing forever at least.

I think one thing that’s very difficult to understand is how God cannot possibly have a beginning. That blows our mind. That seems completely contrary to everything that we see in our daily life in our world. And we know human beings are born. Animals are born. Even plants come from seeds. There’s a beginning and a start to everything in our world so how can God not have a beginning?

Well in some ways it is logical that God did not have a beginning. That he is eternal. Think about this. Imagine that you’re sitting with a child one day in your kitchen and your child asks you “Dad where did this table come from?”

You go on to tell them well the table came from the store.

Where did the store get it?

Well, the store got it from the factory.

Where the factory get it?

Well, the factory got it from the farmers that delivered their goods, delivered the trees to that factory.

Well, where did the farmer get it?

Well, the trees came from seed.

And ultimately you get to the point of telling them, well, trees came from God. That’s really where the material started.

The child goes on to ask you then where did God come from? And as a Christian you explain to the child, well, God has just always been there.

But imagine that wasn’t the answer to the question. Imagine that there was an answer that God came from something else, something else made God. What would the child’s next question be? Well, where did the thing that made God come from? What made that thing? And it would just go on and on forever. In some ways it does make sense that there is something that has always been that is eternal. That is the source of everything that exists.

The Bible tells us that that thing is God. I think this is very comforting for us to know about God. That God is really above all things, greater than all things, he is timeless, and eternal. Therefore, he is also the one that can grant to us eternal life. Because God tells us in His Word.

This is the testimony God has given us eternal life and this life is in his son the one who has the Son has life. The one who does not have the son of God does not have life. I’ve written to these things to you who believe in the name and the son of God said you may know that you have eternal life.

God is the one who can give us eternal life. Who can make us like him able to live forever and ever. And he has told us the way that he has done that through his Son, Jesus Christ. So we can have confidence, so we can know that we have eternal life in him. Amen.
