Are You Going to Heaven?

Acts 16:31, 1 John 5:13

Years ago there was an evangelism program that encouraged Christians to ask their neighbor: ‘If you were to die today, would you go to heaven?’

How would you respond to that question? Even the most seasoned Christian, the one who goes to church every week, might find themselves answering: ‘Maybe? I hope so.’

Is that really the confidence we have as Christians concerning eternal life? Maybe? I hope so?

I’d like to share something with you today: I know that I’m going to heaven.

You might say ‘that sounds completely arrogant, pastor. What makes you so good or so special that you know that you’re going to heaven?’

The reason that I know that I’m going to heaven is because my salvation doesn’t depend on how good I’ve been or try to be, but it depends entirely on my Savior Jesus Christ. Paul and Silas told the jailer at Philippi:

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” –Acts 16:31

That’s a promise that we can take to the bank. Trusting in Jesus Christ we know that we will be in heaven when we die. In 1st John chapter 5 verse 13 he says these words:

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. –1 John 5:13

Note what he says there. It doesn’t say that he writes these things that you ‘might hope’ or you ‘might think’ or ‘maybe’ you have eternal life, but ‘that you may know that you have eternal life.’

Be confident in your own salvation knowing that Christ has won heaven for you.

Yes I know that I’m going to heaven because of Jesus. Amen.
