Rest for the Soul

Matthew 11:28-30

Eight hours of sleep. That seems to be the magic number.

It is most commonly promoted as the amount of sleep that the average person needs. Maybe you can get by with a little less, maybe you need a little more.

Whatever your magic number is though, you need sleep. Your body needs time to rest and recuperate. Your mind needs time to shut down from all the worries and concerns, the scheduling and planning the, problem solving. It needs time to relax.

Your body needs rest and so does your soul. Your soul is tired from striving to live the life that God demands. Your soul is worried or concerned about the guilt of your sins and the consequences of the sinful choices you have made. It needs a place of rest.

Jesus invites us in Matthew chapter 11:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I amgentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” –Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus has rest for your souls. Because he has taken upon himself the burden to live a perfect life. He did it. Jesus has rest for your soul because he has dealt with your sins. He suffered the punishment that your sinful choices deserve and God, because of him, has forgiven all of your sins so you can rest with Jesus.

So heed this invitation. Come to him, shedding the burdens of your guilt. Shed all of your worries and concerns and sit at Jesus feet for he is gentle he will speak words of love to you. Then you will find rest for your souls. Amen.
