There’re a lot of people in our world today that really don’t think there’s that much of a difference between the religions. After all don’t all religions basically do the same thing? Don’t they all trust in a God to which their adherents pray to and praise? Aren’t there basic rules to follow from all the religions? Is it really that important which religion you hold to? Isn’t the thing that’s most important just simply that you believe in something?

Consider this, imagine that you were out on a ship in the middle of the ocean and you’re hanging on to the railing on the side looking out into the vast ocean and all of a sudden the waves grew rough and turbulent and threw you overboard. When you find yourself splashing around in the midst of the water, trying to keep your head above it, thankfully someone on the side of the ship notices you and throws a life ring out to you. And you hold on tightly to that life ring. That life ring keeps you afloat.

How very different it would be if that same person, instead of throwing you a life ring, threw you a brick. Even if you held on tightly to that brick it’s not going to keep you afloat. It’s just going to drag you down, perhaps even drown you. The same is true concerning religion. It does matter, the thing to which we hold dearly.

There are many people that hold firmly to things that are false and wrong that are dragging them down to hell. How important it is to hold on to something that can save. Matthew chapter 1 verse 21 the angel appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him about Mary and Jesus he says:

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. – Matthew 1:21

It tells us plainly that Jesus is one worth holding on to. Because he can truly save. Because Jesus solves the greatest problem that all of us have, the problem of sin. Jesus is the one who took our sins upon himself at the cross and paid for them in full.

Yes don’t hold firmly to other religions and other gods that can’t help you, or like that brick weighing you down, rather trust the one who can and does save: Jesus. Amen
