What is True?
John 17:17
Is butter good for you or bad?
Is chocolate good for you or bad?
Is red meat good for you or bad?
In some areas of our lives there are so many different opinions that it’s almost impossible for us to know what the truth is.
Some people feel the same way in the area of religion. That there are so many different opinions out there, how can a person possibly know what is true?
On the night he was betrayed, Jesus prayed this prayer as recorded in John chapter 17.
“Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth.“ — John 17:17
God’s Word, the Bible, is true. How can you be sure of that?
Well for one, the Bible isn’t just thoughts rained down from heaven. The Bible is full of eyewitness accounts, that is, the record of those who really saw these things happen. This is especially important in connection with Jesus. Jesus is a real person. Jesus really died. Jesus really rose from the dead. The people that saw him, witnessed his miracles, touched him, and heard him, they recorded their experiences for us so that we can know what really happened.
Because this is real human history it is the truth. If Jesus really did die and rise again that changes everything. He prayed, sanctify us through the truth. If Jesus really died for our sins and rose again that means in him God has made you holy. He has taken away your sins and because of Jesus He loves you. You can know this is true because it really happened.
So you may debate what is healthy for you and have different opinions. And maybe you’ll be wrong maybe you’ll be right, but the Bible is something that you can depend upon and trust it because it is the truth God wants you to know. That he loves you in Jesus, amen.
