He is risen! He is risen indeed! Happy Easter everyone. I want to ask you a question. How many Easter eggs can you fit in an empty Easter basket? The answer: one. After that, the basket isn’t empty anymore. Now, maybe you’re giving me the same reaction as my family gave me when I told them that dad joke. Probably some groans. Or maybe just crickets.

Today is a good day to go and tell jokes. To be happy, to be exuberant, to laugh. In fact, the Eastern Orthodox Church has this great tradition on the day after Easter where they go around, they tell each other jokes and they enjoy laughing with one another. And they do this in honor of the great cosmic joke that God pulled on the devil, on Satan by raising Jesus from the dead.

The devil was smug. He thought he had won. He thought that he had done good work. Jesus had suffered. He had died. But lo and behold, what happens. Saint Paul explains what happens. First Corinthians chapter 15,

Death is swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your sting? Grave, where is your victory? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! Therefore, my dear brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

(1 Corinthians 15:55-58)

We have come out the other side of Lent, we are now in this glorious Easter season, and we can genuinely, joyfully laugh because the devil has been defeated. Our Lord Jesus is risen from the dead. Our sins are totally paid for. God publicly proclaims with the open and empty tomb that we have been redeemed, that just as Jesus lives, risen from the dead, so too will you and I who believe in him rise from our own graves to enjoy eternal life in heaven. Isn’t that a wonderful reason to joyfully, exuberantly join together in holy laughter on this happy day after Easter?

Peace be with you. He is risen. He is risen indeed. Amen. Alleluia!
