These Words are for You Too

We can't always see what God is thinking or what He's planning. But here He speaks to us in His word and he tells us I have seen, I have heard, I will be with you.

Exodus 3:7-12

I want to take one more look at this question that we may ask about. Who am I to go with God’s great message of salvation? As we see how Moses wrestled with that question too. So he was not perfect. He was standing on holy ground talking with the God of the universe in this bush that didn’t burn up. And as he’s talking with God, listen, listen to how God speaks to him. This is verse seven of Exodus chapter three.

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

And God said, “I will be with you. (Exodus 3:7-12)

I just want to notice a couple things that God does here, because sometimes we’re looking to ourselves and we’re wondering, who am I that I can do this? And sometimes we’re looking to God and we’re saying, Who are you? Where are you? I imagine a lot of the Israelites trapped in slavery in Egypt were asking that question Where are you? Do you care? Do you see the oppression that’s happening? Didn’t you promise to bring us back to a land flowing with milk and honey? And here we are in slavery.

We can’t always see what God is thinking or what He’s planning. But here He speaks to us in His word and he tells us, and he tells this to Moses what is really going on behind the scenes. And these words are for you too. Whatever you happen to be going through. The Lord says this.

I have seen the misery of my people. I have heard them crying out. And I am concerned about their suffering. Do you see, do you hear me? God, as I’m praying to you, are you concerned at all? I have indeed seen. I have heard. I am concerned. Never forget that. That’s true. Then verse eight says, So I have come down to rescue.

And that’s the story of the Bible, a God who looks and he sees us hurting and enslaved to sin and oppressed and not able to rescue ourselves. And he’s concerned and he comes to rescue us. And that is what God would do with his mighty arm. Rescue them from slavery. And how would he do it? Well, he would use a person. First, he would use Moses. Moses who would come and say, who am I to be part of this rescue mission? And God said, Oh, it’s not about you. I will be with you.

That’s true for us, too. As we go out with God’s saving message, I will be with you. It’s not about who you are. It’s about the message that I have to share. I have come down to rescue you. And ultimately, that’s, that’s the man he used, the God-man Jesus Christ, who came down into our world because he was concerned about us. He had heard. He had seen. And he came down to rescue us by going up to the cross to take our sins away and giving us this message to share. Who am I to do that? I will be with you, says the Lord.
