A Light Burden
Matthew 11:28-30

Seems like every year in the springtime I always try to tell myself that it’s just a few more weeks until summer starts and then I can have a break and then I can have rest. When summer arrives it seems that it’s just as busy as every other time of the year. There’s so many things to fit in. How do you get it all done?
Yes, it seems for us were quite often seeking a break, seeking rest, but we can never truly find it. In Matthew chapter 11 versus 28 through 30 Jesus says this:
Come to me all you who are weary and burden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. From my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
Jesus says that he is the one that can provide us with rest. What sort of rest is this? It’s not rest from our earthly labors we’ll always have those. It’s the rest that he provides for us from our guilt. So we think about our sins. Our sins quite often that bring further troubles in our life further burdens that weigh down heavy upon us. He says that he is the one that gives us rest. He encourages us to take up his yoke, his burden, which he says is light. We’ll find rest for our souls.
Sometimes I think individuals and families wonder can we really make time to go to church or have family devotions? It’s just one more thing to cram into our already busy schedule. But Jesus says that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Those things are truly not a heavy burden upon us. For they bring to us his rest. Rest for our souls as they assure us of his forgiveness and love now and always. Come to Jesus for true rest. Amen.
