What does God have to say about the use of alcohol? We’re looking at some surprising truths about Jesus. And doesn’t it surprise you just a little bit how Jesus first reveals his glory? The very first miracle that Jesus does is: turning water into wine. Now, Jesus could have revealed his glory first by going into a hospital and just curing everybody, but that’s not what he does. He takes water gallons and gallons and gallons of water and turns it into wine to bring joy and gladness to a wedding.

So how should the Christian respond to alcohol, to drinking? Well, there’s principles that we consider and we make wise judgments about, right? We can’t say that the use of alcohol is in and of itself, sinful. It’s not. Jesus drank wine. He started the Lord’s Supper by using wine. It’s not the drinking of alcohol that is sinful. Not, not at all. It’s the abuse of alcohol that’s sinful. It’s drinking too much, losing control, falling into even more sin that leads us down dangerous paths, right?

But maybe even though it’s not sinful to drink alcohol, maybe take a moment and reflect on your use of alcohol. Has that been a problem, is it getting to be a problem? Are you in control of yourself or are you going farther than you should be? I can’t tell you how many marriages, how many families are hurting because of excessive improper use of alcohol. If your spouse, if a person who is close to you is telling you this is getting to be a problem, if they have the courage to do that, take it seriously and get help.

But here we see what Jesus does for his very first miracle to bring glory to God.

“Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (John 2:7-10)

Jesus saves the best for last. An interesting thing to see about Jesus. These little things that he does bringing joy and gladness to a wedding are one of the ways that he blesses his people, that he blesses you. So if you are of of an age where you can legally drink alcohol and you can do it in a way that uses self-control, enjoy that and enjoy joy and gladness as you celebrate with the people around you. God, be with you.
