Too Busy to Pray

I have so much to do today, I don't have time to pray. Have you ever caught yourself thinking that way? So hectic, so busy, so much to do, so much pressure, I just don't have time to sit down and pray.

Luke 5:16

I have so much to do today, I don’t have time to pray. Have you ever caught yourself thinking that way? So hectic, so busy, so much to do, so much pressure, I just don’t have time to sit down and pray. Is that a self-defeating choice?

Jesus was certainly busy. There were times when he didn’t get to eat. Times when the crowd was just pressing around him. People demanding his time and attention, hungering to be healed and taught, talk about busy.

Luke tells us something very interesting about Jesus in Luke Chapter 5:16 it says

But Jesus often withdrew to deserted places and prayed. (Luke 5:16)

You might say Jesus was so busy that he had to take time to pray. What did Jesus do when he went to those places to be alone, sometimes with his disciples, to pray? I’m sure he sat down and reflected on God’s Word. Reflected on God’s will for his life, how God wanted him to live. Thought about the promises that God had given. That God loves mankind. And that Jesus was actually sent to save mankind. With that reflection on God’s will, Jesus then could know what to pray for. To pray that God would bless him and guide him, so that he would be God’s instrument and carry out good in his life.

God wants you to take time to reflect on his will for you. He guides you with his Ten Commandments so that you can fulfill the roles that he has given you in your life. But especially he wants you to reflect on the promises that he has given you. That he loves you. Forgives you for Jesus sake. And wants to be with you every step of your earthly life, even if it’s busy. Then you would know what to pray for! Lord, help me do this, help me fulfill your will, help me realize better how much you love me. Help me be confident that I’ll one day be with you in heaven. Help me set the right priorities so that my busy life doesn’t distract me from what is really important.

So are you busy? Are you too busy to pray? Then you are too busy. Set aside some time just like Jesus did, often, to meditate upon God’s Word and to pour out your heart to God in prayer. Then God will bless you and you will get everything done according to His will. To Him be the glory, now and forever, amen.
