You Can’t Mess This Up

You're here for a purpose. I hope you know that.

Psalm 138:8, Romans 8:28, Ephesians 2:8-10

You’re here for a purpose. I hope you know that. Take hold of that truth. As you do so I also want to make sure that you’re aware that one of the things that the enemy can do against us is take a really powerful truth and distort it just a bit. And I found that when it comes to purpose, the enemy is really good at that. I’ve heard people be so under pressure and stressed out trying to figure out what their purpose is and just worried that they’re not going to fulfill it, that they’re going to miss out somehow on God’s purpose for them. And maybe that’s been you. I’ve also heard people who have just been so full of regret because they feel like they’ve messed up God’s purpose.

If you’re starting to feel the pressure of fulfilling God’s purpose or feeling the regret that maybe you messed it up. I want to share a verse with you. Psalm 138:8 says

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me. Your love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not abandon the works of your hands. (Psalm 138:8)

You’re not actually powerful enough to mess up God’s purpose for you. It’s not how it works. God’s purposes are always fulfilled. They are always carried out. Think about Romans 8:28. That’s a really loved verse for many people. People like to talk about how God works everything for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. And maybe people quote the first part a bit more talk about how God works everything for good. But really take note of that second part “who are called according to his purpose.” Whose purpose? His purpose. Who works in everything for good? God works, everything for good.

God will fulfill his purpose for you. No one can get in the way of God’s purpose. So how do we embrace it then? Go to Ephesians 2 verses 8 to 10. In those verses it talks about how we are saved by grace through faith. This is not of ourselves. It is a gift from God, not by works so that no one should boast. So we are set right with God simply through believing in the fact that Jesus died for our sins and then rose again, that he lived the life we were meant to live, laid it down, died on the cross, and rose again to set us right with God. It’s a gift. So when you receive that gift, now the verse continues. In verse ten, it says,

For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do the works that he has put before us. (Ephesians 2:8-10)

So our life with Christ is a gift that we receive through faith. Also, then the purpose that He is fulfilling for us is also something that comes from God. It’s something we step forward in these works because we are his workmanship. He established these before us. He set these works before us. He is working in us. So how do we embrace this? Well, be in Christ. When you are in His word, when you are hearing the gospel, when you are going to worship and taking the Lord’s Supper, when you are surrounded by brothers and sisters who are also in Christ, God shapes you. God shapes us. And so you can step forward confidently, boldly, knowing that He will fulfill his purpose for you. Because really, it’s all about his purpose and his work.
