So much to worry about!

There's so much to worry about today... but should that be our focus? What are you worried about? God the Father knows your needs and promises to provide for you.

Wow. There seems to be a heightened sense of worry in the world today. Whether it’s coronavirus, systematic racism, riots, the economy, wow. There’s so much to be worried and concerned about. But is it really true that there’s more worry in the world today? Or is it just that there’s bigger things that are drawing more people’s attention?

Think back just to last year. Were you worried about finances? About family? About your health? About the future? It seems that worry really is a part of our human existence. Largely it’s because we don’t know what the future holds. Jesus speaks to this issue of worry in Matthew Chapter 6.

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the unbelievers chase after all these things. Certainly your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:31-33)

Jesus points us to a very comforting fact. We don’t know the future. We don’t know what it holds, but our heavenly Father does. We don’t have to worry about what we will eat, or what we will drink, or what will we wear, because God our Heavenly Father is watching over us. And just as a good father provides for his children, so our Heavenly Father provides for us.

So we can face our future knowing that there’s someone above us who knows the future. And he’s watching out for us. And then Jesus pointed our attention to where it really needs to be. He said, “seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.” See what we eat, and what we drink, and what we wear, they’re not most important things. Our most important aspect of life is our relationship with God.

And God wants that relationship to be healthy. Because of our sins of worry and rebellion we don’t deserve to be right with God. God loves us. So he sent his Son Jesus to live and die in our place so that our relationship with God could be restored. That’s what God wants your focus to be. Are you right with him.

Through his Son Jesus the Savior, you can be right. You can have his righteousness charged to your account so that God loves you and works all things for your good.

So you don’t have to worry about your earthly life, Father in Heaven is watching over you. And you don’t have to be worried about eternal life, because God your Father sent his Son to be your Savior from sin. With these two aspects of our life covered there’s no need to be worried. Whatever the future holds, God the Father will handle it. May his peace fill your life. Amen.
