Isaiah 53:6

When my wife and I bought our house we didn’t have the money to pay for it. So we went to the bank and got a loan. Now each month we have to pay that loan back. Little by little, over time. I know that I’ll be happy when that debt is paid.

If someone has a loan and they can’t pay it or don’t pay, eventually the bank comes and takes their home away. That idea of losing your home because of debt is a real one. And not just physically, but spiritually.

When we sin against God, we incurred debt towards him. And we can try and pay it back, we can try and do good things, try and be the people that God wants us to be. We can even make great sacrifice in God’s name. But the reality is the debt is so great we can’t pay it back and we’re going to lose our home.

But God has intervened. God has done something incredible to pay that debt. This is what he says in Isaiah chapter 53.

We all have gone astray like sheep. Each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has charged all our guilt to him. (Isaiah 53:6)

God has charged all your guilt, all your debt, to Jesus. And Jesus has made full and sufficient payment for all of your sins so that you are forgiven. And by doing that Jesus has secured a home for you in heaven forever.

So when you’re worried about paying off your debt, not to the bank, but to God, Jesus is the answer. He has lived and died for you so that you can live with him forever in his house in heaven. Amen.
