What’s Trending?

What's trending? Who is Jesus? Today Pastor Kyle Madson talks about the Christian Creeds in our continuing series on church liturgy.

Matthew 16:16-17

So what’s trending? That’s the new way that we ask what is currently important to society, to the culture around us. Culture of which we’re a part. And we learn what’s trending, what’s being talked about, or what’s buzzing by figuring out what’s popular on Facebook, or Twitter, or Instagram.

Jesus once asked his disciples “what’s trending?”

He asked them to figure out, or to tell him, who people were saying he was. And he got the trending answers. Some say Moses, some say Elijah, some say John the Baptist, or one of the other prophets. Then he asked them a more pointed question. It wasn’t about what’s trending. He asked them to tell him who they believed or who they creeded that he was.

Peter spoke up, he usually did.

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16)

Jesus was very complimentary, he spoke very highly of Peters answer, and this is why.

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 16:17)

Jesus spoke highly of Peter’s response because it didn’t come from the winds that were blowing around during the day, but rather Peter simply said what God said about Jesus himself.

What a glorious thing! It simply echoed God and this is what the Christian Creed’s do for the church they simply say about God what God says about himself. What valuable things for our mouths to be speaking and for our ears to be hearing to be echoing God for in that echo is life and in it is salvation. Amen.
