All About Me

Romans 14:7-8

Life is pretty hard for my little children sometimes. Now I don’t want you to feel badly for them. I don’t mean they don’t have enough toys or a warm place to sleep or meals. What’s hard for them, every day, many times every day, is finding out the bitter reality that life isn’t all about them. All about what they want and what they desire and getting their own way.

It’s hard for children. You know what’s even harder and messier is when us big children find out the same thing. Every day. That life isn’t all about me, getting what I want, when I want it.

St. Paul talks about this and what a rescue it is actually that our life is not all about me when he talks about the Lord. This is what he says in Romans 14:

For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. —Romans 14:7-8

When we hear about what the Lord has done for us, it rescues us. Especially from our selfish mess of a life completely revolving around me or around you.

What a gracious and joyous rescue that is to know that his living and dying keeps us from having to live a life that is only revolving around me, but rather puts us in his life. His life that has lived for you and his life that then has lived through you for the benefit of your neighbors around you. Rejoice and live in this joyous rescue that is life in the Lord. Amen.
