When disaster strikes, is God in control?

Romans 8:28

Have you seen the pictures?

That is often the question that is asked when massive disaster hits. A hurricane, tornado, earthquake, or fire we see the images of people’s lives wrecked, their possessions taken away, sometimes even their lives.

The tragedy doesn’t have to be massive and widespread it can be very local. Sudden death of a loved one, the diagnosis of a debilitating disease, a freak accident at work. How are we to view such things when they happen?

Is God really in control?

In the Bible he promises in Romans chapter 8 that he works all things for the good of those that love him.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. -Romans 8:28

When hardships come we often think that God is punishing us. We search our lives for the reason for that punishment, if we’re honest we can see lots of reasons why God should punish us. We haven’t lived the way that he wants us to, but is God working for our good?

The ultimate proof of that is in the cross of Jesus. The greatest tragedy in mankind’s history is the crucifixion of God’s righteous Son Jesus Christ. The only man to ever live a perfect life was killed as a common criminal and yet through that great tragedy God has worked the greatest blessing for you. Through Jesus death on the cross he is forgiven all of your sins. If God can turn that tragedy into good for you he can work all things for your good.

So when hardship comes, don’t look to your life for a cause, look to Jesus, then you will be assured that God loves you and that he is working all things for your good. Amen.
