That’s my name, (don’t) wear it out.

“That’s my name, don’t wear it out.” A mother or father might say that to a person, maybe a teacher or an older brother or sister to a younger sibling. “That’s my name, don’t wear it out.”

God says something very different to us, he says “this is my name, wear it out. Use it often, use it very often, in fact.”

So when Christians gather we do such things and God’s Word gives us the the privilege to do just that.

Psalm 50 verse 15 the Lord says

Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.

When a gathering of Christians in worship calls on the name of the Lord they do it because they’re baptized, because they are called into the family of God by that very name. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and given that name they have the privilege to call on that name routinely.

To call on it in the middle of trouble, in the middle of this world where there is sin and shame and guilt and where our flesh constantly plagues us. And so we have the privilege to call on the name of the Lord, to wear it out, to use the name given to us in our baptism, and wear it regularly that we might be delivered from all trouble in that very name.

Dear Christian, wear it out, amen.
