Free Gift

Romans 6:23

Imagine it’s Christmas morning, everyone’s gathered around the tree to open presents.

Somebody hands you a beautiful gift. You open it up to see the perfect present. Just what you wanted, but then you notice on top there’s a slip of paper.

You look at it and it says: “Invoice for $50. Payable within seven days.”

I’m sure you would be quite bewildered. A gift after all, by definition, is free. This would be a transaction.

Did you know that in the Bible it tells us that God gives us salvation as a gift, a free gift?

Romans tells us

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 6:23

First of all God tells us the bad news. The wages of sin, that is, what we earn for our bad deeds that we’ve done, is death. Not just physical death, but also eternal death.

Separation from the Father for all eternity. But then the Lord also gives us the good news.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 6:23

God the Father sent his Son as the very first Christmas gift. And Jesus came as that baby in a manger to fulfill the plan of salvation. And he did that with his innocent death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead.

This Christmas, received that gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Amen.
