Why Go to Church?

Romans 3:22-24

“You just think you’re better than everyone else.” That’s what a man told me when I was talking to him about going to church. He thought that Christianity teaches that a person gets to heaven by being good.

He saw Christians going to church and he assumed, wanting to go to heaven, so then he concluded that they must think that they’re better than everyone else.

Is that why Christians go to church? Because they think they’re better? No, Christians go to church to hear God’s Word and in that word he teaches us that we’re not better, in fact we’re just as sinful as everyone else.

In Romans chapter 3 he teaches us:

There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. –Romans 3:22b-23

It doesn’t matter who you are. You’ve broken God’s commandments. You’ve failed to live the way God wants you to live. You’re a sinner. You’re in the same boat as everyone else. That’s what Christianity teaches, but God continued in that very same section saying:

…and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. –Romans 3:24

Yes all have sinned. Jesus has also paid for the sins of all. The Christian gets to heaven not by being good, but because Jesus lived a perfect life and died an innocent death for all people. So it doesn’t matter what your sins are. Jesus has forgiven you.

That’s why Christians go to church. They go to church to hear about Jesus their Savior and be assured that God loves sinners just like them.

So come worship with us. Come sit at the feet of this God who shows you your sin, but also shows you your Savior. Then you will learn that he loves and forgives sinners just like you. Amen.
