Why are we so busy?

Psalm 127:1-2

As a family sometimes our schedule can get crazy.

We think about all the things we have to do: pick up Billy from school, drop off Johnny at soccer practice, bring Susie to ballet, and rush home for supper. And our schedule the next day’s just as busy filled with piano lesson and math team.

Why do we do this to ourselves and to our kids? Well, we want to build them up, to encourage them to find their talents and abilities, maybe help them to be well-rounded adults.

In Psalm 127 Solomon says these words:

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
In vain you rise early and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.

Why do we spend so much time on all of the other things in life instead of focusing on what is most important?

Certainly it’s good for us to expose our children to a number of different things, number of different opportunities. But Solomon really points us to what is most important. He says that if a house is not built by the Lord its builders labor in vain. Think about ourselves being focused on everything else, maybe forgetting sometimes what’s most important: God and His Word.

A house that isn’t built on God and his word can stand for at a time, but when the storms of trouble and difficulty arise in our lives how quickly they can cause chaos. And cause the home to break apart. But a home that is founded on God and his word is one that can stand those storms, as God’s forgiveness and love permeates from such a home.

Let us remember how important it is to have God as our foundation in our homes to have the Lord build up those homes and to do so through his word. And there as it says in Psalm 127 that we find peace, and rest. Sleep for those he loves.

This week I encourage you as you consider all the busyness and in your own life to think about what is most important and take time for God and for his word. For there we find peace and rest. Amen.
